Appropriateness
A student notices a clinical computer left unlocked in a public area.
Action: Lock the screen and tell the supervising member of staff.
Very appropriate. It removes the immediate confidentiality risk and uses the proper route without accessing more information.
Importance
A student is asked to perform a procedure they have never done.
Factor: Suitable supervision is immediately available.
Very important. Supervision may make the task a safe learning opportunity; its absence may make the request unsafe.
What to say
A senior states a patient’s allergy incorrectly before discussing a prescription.
Response: “Could we check that? The patient told us they are allergic to penicillin.”
Very appropriate. The wording is prompt, specific and respectful, and asks for verification rather than making an accusation.
